NEW JERSEY — Portions of four South Jersey state parks will be closed locally due to what the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife on Thursday called “unprecedented unauthorized use.”

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has closed six targeted locations within Wildlife Management Areas that attract large gatherings and include former quarry pits at which swimming is prohibited and extremely dangerous due to the depth and low temperature of the water which can threaten life and safety.

Swimming is only authorized in New Jersey State Parks at lifeguarded beaches.

Those taegeted areas are being closed to the public through Sept. 15, the division announced in a statement on social media.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an increase in illegal off-road vehicle use in the Wildlife Management Areas across the state, the division told Patch.
