UPDATE: Glen Landing Student Fails to Qualify for Scripps National Spelling Bee Semifinals

Bisma Nasir learned just before 6 p.m. Wednesday that she did not qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals.

UPDATE 6 p.m. 5/30: Despite nailing the two words she was asked to spell in the preliminary rounds Wednesday—calypso and recalcitrant—Glen Landing Middle School student Bisma Nasir did not advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals.

The semifinalists were just announced on ESPN 3.

Glen Landing Middle School eighth-grader Bisma Nasir is just minutes away from learning whether she has advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, outside Washington, D.C.

Nasir had a strong showing on Wednesday. The Blackwood resident correctly spelled both words she was given—calypso in Round 2 and recalcitrant in Round 3.

The preliminary rounds aired online on ESPN 3.

Nasir and the other 277 contestants completed a computer spelling test on Tuesday. The scores from those tests will be combined with results from Rounds 2 and 3 to determine the semifinalists who will compete Thursday.

Thursday's semifinals will be broadcast on television, on ESPN 2, beginning at 10 a.m. The finals will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Nasir advanced to the National Spelling Bee when she won the Camden County Spelling Bee on March 7.
