Robert Jones started his career as a patrol officer, working out of the original Gloucester Township Municipal Building on East Church Street in the Blackwood section of the township.

As a detective, Jones investigated fraud for many years. He moved up the ranks to detective sergeant to lieutenant, where he was in charge of the detective bureau.

Towards the end of his career, he was promoted to captain and was the Patrol Division Commander up until his retirement.

“Over the course of his honorable career, Captain Jones was someway involved in almost every major criminal investigation that the Department investigated,” police said in a statement. “He is remembered fondly by his fellow officers, co-workers, and members of the community that he served. Captain Jones retired in Florida, and due to travel restrictions, his funeral service will be postponed to a later date.

“We are thankful for his ‘Dedication to Service — Commitment to Excellence’ to his fellow officers and the community of Gloucester Township, and the entire Gloucester Township Police Department Family mourns his loss. Rest in Peace Sir.”
