BELLMAWR, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) continues to investigate the cause of the collapse of a retaining wall on I-295 in Bellmawr.
NJDOT has hired a forensic engineer to independently determine the cause of the collapse, according to nj.com. Demolition of the wall began April 1, and continued as of Thursday morning.
It’s too early for officials to determine the extent of the damage, when a lane of the highway that closed following the collapse will reopen or how much any of it will cost, according to the Courier Post.

The wall was built as part of the $800 million Direct Connection Project, the goal of which is to provide a seamless route for drivers traveling on I-295 through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42.
