Mullen Students Think on the Box

As part of a Women's History Month project, Frank Albano's science students were challenged to put famous women on a Wheaties box and tell their teacher a bit about them.

The following article was provided by Ann A. Mullen Middle School eighth-grade science teacher Frank Albano:

You have all seen a box of Wheaties with the face of a famous athlete on the front. Well, we took the step that Wheaties has not yet taken. The students’ job was to design a Wheaties box with a famous woman scientist, doctor, inventor, or mathematician on the front cover of the box. Athletes aren’t the only people who contribute to our society. We first spent a day discussing how women for centuries have contributed to our everyday lives without the recognition they truly deserve.

They then had to write a brief summary on why their scientist is important and why they deserve to be on a Wheaties box. Maybe more children would be interested in these types of careers if the individuals who have contributed most to society were featured.
