GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A so-called Super Wawa may soon be coming to the site of a former bakery in Gloucester Township.

The Gloucester Township Zoning Board will hear a proposal from Blackwood Clementon Investors, LLC, to build a Wawa Food Market and Gas Station at 1340 Blackwood-Clementon Road at Wednesday night’s meeting.

If approved, it would join a slate of Wawa stores already open in the Blackwood and Sicklerville sections of the township. Wawa recently expanded its menu to include dinner options, and some offer drive-thru options. Read more here: Wawa To Offer Drive-Thru Service At Burlington County Store

Wawa was founded as an iron foundry in 1803, and expanded into dairy farming in 1902, according to its website. It now has more than 850 stores, including more than 600 than offer gas.

The proposed Gloucester Township site is home to a former Entenmann’s Bakery Outlet and Rita’s Water Ice, according to the agenda for Wednesday night’s meeting.

The Rita’s Water Ice is still open, and the Entenmann’s relocated and is now open as a store only, according to 42freeway.com.

The Zoning Board will consider the preliminary and final site plan proposal. It meets at 7 p.m. in the municipal building, 1261 Chews Landing Road.

That consideration will come one day after the planning board considers proposed ordinances surrounding alternative energy sources in Gloucester Township.

Last month, Gloucester Township Council approved a proposed ordinance on introduction to add plug-in electric vehicle charging stations to its land development ordinance. It also voted to add a section concerning solar energy to its land development ordinance.

The ordinance regarding electric vehicle charging stations provides the general public with "adequate, convenient and safe locations" for charging stations.

The solar energy proposal provides the opportunity for solar energy to be installed at homes, businesses and other public places throughout the township to "protect the public health, safety and welfare," preserve environmentally sensitive land and open spaces and preserve the character of the environment.

The planning board will consider those items when it meets Tuesday night at the municipal building. If the proposals are found to be in compliance with the township’s master plan, they will be sent back to council for final consideration.
