Police Credit Social Media in ID of Alleged Cigarette Thieves

Police have charged two people, including a Gloucester Township woman, with stealing cigarettes from the Blenheim Wawa last month, and are crediting tips from the public with identifying the two people believed responsible for the theft.

Gloucester Township Police say tipsters identified one of the suspects within minutes of the department posting surveillance video and photos on social-media sites.

Waverly M. Smith, 46, of Burlington, is already in custody. Police allege he reached behind the counter at the Wawa store to steal several packs of cigarettes.

Erin A. Killeen, 21, of Heron Place, in the township's Laurel Springs section, had not been apprehended as of Sunday morning.

Killeen allegedly asked a clerk at the Wawa for directions to the Atlantic City Expressway at around 2:15 a.m. Aug. 23 in order to create a diversion so Smith could steal cigarettes, according to police.

Gloucester Township Police last Thursday posted surveillance video and still images of the crime to their social-media sites—Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Within about 10 minutes, the police department had received several tips identifying the female suspect as Killeen.

Police learned during the course of their investigation that the two suspects left the store together in a U-Haul truck. They later learned the U-Haul, which had been stolen, was stopped by Cherry Hill Police later the morning of Aug. 23, with all four occupants arrested and charged in connection with the vehicle theft.

Gloucester Township Police on Saturday announced they have charged Killeen and Smith with shoplifting in connection with the Blenheim Wawa incident.

Smith remains incarcerated at Camden County Jail following his Aug. 23 arrest in Cherry Hill.

Killeen remained at large as of Sunday morning.
