Wall Built As Part Of $800M Project Collapses On I-295: Officials
Part of I-295 will be closed until further notice while the New Jersey Department of Transportation stabilizes a collapsed retaining wall.
BELLMAWR, NJ — The right lane of I-295 north is closed at Essex Avenue in Bellmawr after the partial collapse of a retaining wall, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced on Thursday.
The lane closure will remain in place until further notice while NJDOT stabilizes the wall, according to officials. Drivers should expect heavy congestion on I-295 north and Route 42 north or plan an alternate route.
The wall was built as part of the $800 million Direct Connection Project, the goal of which is to provide a seamless route for drivers traveling on I-295 through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42.

“Motorists should expect heavy congestion on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound. If possible, you should plan an alternate route during peak travel times,” Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works, said. “When the overall project is completed, it will alleviate much of the traffic congestion currently experienced on a daily basis. It will be a monumental change for this highway interchange creating a substantial upgrade to the current configuration.”
The precise timing of the work depends on weather and other factors. Drivers are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
