Haddonfield Native Dies While Hiking In California

Funeral services for Eric Juliani will take place on Friday.

HADDONFIELD, NJ — A Haddonfield native died while hiking in California earlier this month. Eric Juliani, 29, died while hiking Mount Whitney in Sequoia National Park on Saturday, May 5, according to his online obituary. He was living in Campbell, California, but was formerly from Haddonfield.

“He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, kind heart, and love of family,” the obituary reads. “He was passionate about sports, the outdoors, and good food. Eric’s personality had a strong impact on those around him, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.”

He fell 2,000 feet from the mountain, which was described as “snow covered and icy” at the time of the fall, according to the Courier Post. He was discovered by two hikers. Friends had contacted local authorities to report that Juliani was missing.

He was the son of Philip and Judi Juliani and the younger brother of Andrew and Rachael Juliani, according to the obituary.

In 2007, he graduated from Haddon Township High School, where he played football and baseball, according to the Philly Voice. He graduated from Rowan University in 2011 with a degree in English/Language Arts Education, and was a teacher.

He was one of two hikers found dead after falling from the mountain in a 10-day span, according to the Visalia Times Delta. Juliani’s body was found on May 6. A Facebook post said he was going to hike the mountain from May 4-6.

His funeral, followed by a celebration of his life, will take place on Friday, May 18, 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Haddonfield United Methodist Church, 29 Warwick Rd., Haddonfield, NJ. Casual dress is suggested.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Eric may be made to a foundation that Eric was passionate about, the Ryan E. Bishop Leadership Fund at http://exploreforbishop.org/index.htm.
