Obituary: Dr. James D. Stewart

Services are on Saturday, July 7.

Dr. James D. Stewart, 90, a retired oral surgeon, died on July 2 at home.

A resident of Haddonfield for over 70 years, he was a graduate of St. Joseph's Preparatory School, Temple University and Temple Dental School. Post Graduate training continued at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, the oldest hospital in the country, of which Benjamin Franklin was a founding member. Dr. Stewart engaged in private practice for 37 years in Camden County and continued while teaching oral surgery at his alma mater where he met his future wife, Jane Garrett, a senior student in the Oral Hygiene School. 

He served as chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center for 25 years and was the founding chief of his specialty at Zurbrugg Hospital. His hospital staff appointments included Virtual (West Jersey Hospital) and Cooper and he also served as a consultant to Ancora State Hospital.  Dr. Stewart was the former president of New Jersey Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and held memberships in local, state and national dental societies as well as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons.  In retirement he maintained an active license and was always alert to new treatments.

Dr. Stewart served on the Haddonfield Board of Zoning and Adjustment for 14 years, was president of the Haddonfield 65 Club and was also a volunteer caregiver.  A side interest was membership on The New York Futures Exchange.  He firmly believed that one must have interest beyond one's profession or life is too limiting.  

Dr. Stewart is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Jane.  His daughter Jayne said, “Dad was very dependable and always there for us if there was a problem.”

In addition to his daughter, he is also survived by a son James (Eileen); three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 7 at 10:30 AM at , 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, NJ with the family receiving guests beginning at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to The Cathedral Kitchen, 1514 Federal St., Camden, NJ  08105 or to St. Jude Shrine, 512 West Saratoga St., Baltimore MD  21202.  Arrangements by .
