HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Friday's evacuation of Haddon Township High School reportedly was the result of a science project.
Haddon Township police responded to the school on Friday following reports of a potentially hazardous substance at the school, according to Acting Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer and Haddon Township Police Chief Mark Cavallo.

The substance reportedly turned out to be related to a science project. A student told nj.com he had brought an antique plate known as "Fiestaware" to school for a project on Monday. Fiestaware is uranium glass. On Friday, someone determined the plate was hazardous, leading to the evacuation.
In 2009, the Smithsonian reported that some Fiestaware contains uranium oxide, which can emit low levels of radioactivity that are not harmful. As for eating off the plate, the Food and Drug Administration does not recommend not eating off the plate.
