Wanted: Foolproof Bird-Capturing Ideas

A year-old macaw has taken to the trees in Haddonfield and a family is desperate to get him down. Do you have expertise as a macaw whisperer?

Can you help a Haddonfield family get out of this fine-feathered mess?

Tango, a blue and yellow macaw, escaped his home two days ago—at just a year old, it is the bird’s first flight and it’s causing a big kerfuffle.

Tango has moved from tree to tree around Peyton Avenue and he just won’t come down. The family has finally located him, but Tango won’t or can’t get down from the tree, says Kelly Adair, whose brother owns the bird. Adair is on Tango-watch as they brainstorm ways to get him down.

And it’s not like the family hasn’t tried plenty already.

“My brother has climbed as high as he could, I—who am five months pregnant—was out in the heat with my 3-year-old daughter for five hours yesterday trying to coax him with food and toys,” Adair recounts.

“Sam, my brother's girlfriend, cooked a buffet of food for him, as the bird store advised, to which there was no success, and now Tango's cage is in the back of Brian's pickup truck on Peyton Avenue, in hopes he will fly down to it.”

Calls to animal rescue and the fire department didn’t turn up any help. The family even called a tree company, but the boom lift couldn’t reach the bird.

Adair surmises that Tango doesn't know how to maneuver through the trees—plus the blue jays and mocking birds aren't proving the best of branch companions. Tango keeps flying up instead of down and sometimes gets out of the family's sight.

"If people could just keep a look out for him that would be great. We have lost track of him a couple times but he calls very loudly to find us," Adair says.

“Now that we have eyes on him, we need hands on him. Please, if anyone can help, if you can help in any way, we would be so grateful.”

So—any ideas, Haddonfield? How can the family get Tango back where he belongs?
