The goals of National Night Out are to heighten crime and drug awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnership as well as to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, the Hoboken Police Department announced.

A parade has also been added as well as other festivities (including, but not limited to, a watermelon eating contest), with the goal of engaging more of the community in the annual event.
