Two coffee houses where kids can play, nature walks in Liberty State Park, and 'Today Show' guest at Hoboken's Church Square Park.

Since we know Hoboken parents need a break -- two cafes in North Jersey, The Hive in Hoboken and The Village in Edgewater, let parents hang out with a bite while their kids enjoy a playroom. In COVID times, the rooms must be reserved in increments.

"I struggled as a little brown girl in New Jersey in the '80s and '90s," Hoboken mom Raakhee Mirchandani told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Hager Bush in her TV appearance on the "Today" Show last week. Now for the main event: Mirchandani will launch her new children's book that celebrates diversity, "Hair Twins" (Little, Brown), with a reading and launch party at 11 a.m. in Church Square Park this coming Saturday. Mayor Ravi Bhalla and other special guests will attend. Read more about it and click the link at the end of the story to sign up: Hoboken Author To Read In Local Park

Liberty State Park walks: Nature and history

Liberty State Park is a short walk, drive, or light rail stop from Hoboken. The park offers a playground, views of the Hudson River and local ecosystem, nature walks, and historic lectures. You can learn about everything from the now-defunct Blue Comet train to immigration to local birds.

This Saturday, they're hosting a Caven Point Beach Walk and scavenger hunt. Dress for the outdoors, wear shoes that can get muddy, and prepare for a mile walk from 300 Morris Pesin Drive to the beach. You'll be surprised at this urban oasis. The following week will include a Horseshoe Crab Walk. All ages are welcome, but you have to register.

Find out about May nature programs at the park here, and subscribe to get e-mail updates on the park's other events at the bottom of this page. Directions to the park and its parking lots are here.

Take a break! This week: The Hive and The Village

We've been trying to find the best ways for parents to take a break and self-care. Do you know of any discounts, travel deals, or promotions for families? Email us to tell us.

There are two relatively new North Jersey cafes — The Hive in Hoboken and The Village in Edgewater — that let parents hang out with coffee and a bite, and they can also rent a playroom full of cool toys for the kids. In covid times, the rooms can be reserved hourly, and rates are reasonable.

  • At the Hive, at 1000 Park Ave. (Park and Tenth Street) in Hoboken, parents can grab fresh-baked goods and coffee up front any time. The back room has a playhouse and unique toys. Right now, it can be rented out in 45-minute increments. Find out more here.
  • The Village Edgewater, at 250 Old River Road in Edgewater, was also founded by two moms. Find out about their offerings — coffee, food, play room, parties, classes — here.
