Are Strollers the Secret of Hoboken's Success?

Governing.com coined the term "stroller index" after visiting Hoboken.

Some might complain about the amount of strollers in town.

But, according to governing.com, the amount of strollers is the key secret to Hoboken's growth and wealth.

Calling it the fastest growing city on the East Coast, Mark Funkhouse — who is the director of the Governing Institute — said the amount of young families is causing Hoboken to prosper.

"(The) median household income is $101,782, almost double that of the nation as a whole," Funkhouser wrote in a recent story. "The town is doing very well these days, and I think I know why."

"A city that's a good place to raise children is generally just a good place, period," the story stated, which is why the population has seen a growth of 17,000 people in the last decade. 

"Many of the folks who live in Hoboken probably work across the Hudson in Manhattan," Funkhouser wrote. "They probably have the wherewithal to live anywhere in the New York metropolitan area they want to, but they chose Hoboken."
