'Cake Boss,' Family Rescued From Foggy Waters

A Friday night boat ride along the Hudson River with family and friends was no piece of cake for Buddy Valastro.

The Cake Boss, his wife, another couple and nine children were rescued when their 32-foot Boston Whaler drifted into dangerous waters amid thick fog near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge at about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The boat became lost in the Ambrose Channel, a busy area containing large commercial vessels. Valastro told CNN it was a "scary" situation that nearly took a turn for the worse when a large vessel was about 30 feet away headed straight for them.

"I saw him but I don't think he saw us," Valastro told CNN. "We had to get out of the way... I turned quick. It got really, really scary. I said,' You know, it's time to call for help."

No one was injured during the ordeal, but some of the children became seasick, CNN reported.

Valastro, who owns Carlo's Bakery, was navigating the boat from Sandy Hook to Jersey City.

Firefighters from the Summer Boat Program, which routinely rescues stranded boats and people in the water, towed the boat out of the Ambrose Channel before the NYPD escorted the vessel to Jersey City, according to the New York Post.

"The fog rolled in like a wave,” one of the firefighters, Chris Tucker, told the New York Daily News. "It was sunny one moment and the next you weren’t able to see what's in front of your boat. Even an experienced boater would tell you that isn't something you want to find yourself in."

The Morris County resident was grateful the rescuers guided them to safety.

"Want to thank my friends at the nypd and FDNY for coming to help me in my family stuck in the fog in the Hudson towing us in you guys rock," Valastro Tweeted Friday night and included an Instagram photo with one of the rescuers.

Valastro's wife, however, wasn't amused.

"Next time we go out at night need to check the forecast #mywifewantstokillme," Valastro later Tweeted Friday night.
