Celebrating 50 Years of Hoboken High School

The high school is celebrating half a century in Hoboken this weekend.

Generations of Hoboken High School students are getting together this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school.

Multiple events over a three day period will celebrate half a century of Red Wings.

The school opened its doors in 1962, Munoz said, in the wake of then-President John F. Kennedy's call of service. "That is what pushed the fundraising through (to open the school)," Munoz said. "That's what we were told by the class of '63."

That, Munoz continued, is why the school's football field is named after John F. Kennedy.

On Saturday, the high school's football team will play Hudson Catholic. During half time, current HHS cheerleaders will perform alongside former cheerleaders.

The former cheerleaders, Munoz said, "are going to be cheering alongside the current ones."

The alumni band will also perform.

After the game, the committee has organized a block party on Grand in the area of Eighth and Ninth Streets.

Christopher Munoz, one of the organizers of the anniversary festivities said that beside honoring past athletes and alumni, there will be fundraiser at the KOLO club, to raise money for scholarships.

The committee is aiming to raise $10,000 a year, to give five students a $2,000 scholarship, Munoz said.

From notable alumni to recent graduates, everyone has been invited and encouraged to partake in the celebration, Munoz said.
