Hoboken City Hall Recommended For $37,500 Historic Preservation Grant

Hoboken could receive a  $37,500 historic preservation grant to renovate and restore Hoboken City Hall.

The project is one of two that has been recommended by the state for historic preservation. The other project — which could receive $50,000 — is Barrow Mansion in Jersey City.

"The Historic Trust’s continued support for the preservation of New Jersey’s heritage will help these Hudson County communities maintain their sense of place,” said New Jersey Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Richard E. Constable in a press release. "These matching grants will go to projects that encourage local investment, create jobs, stimulate economic growth and attract tourism. As these projects show, New Jersey’s history is a great asset for attracting residents and businesses to participate in our state’s growth and development."

Statewide, the New Jersey Historic Trust recommended 37 preservation planning projects, for a total of $1.4 million in grant funding.

The 2012 grant round support non-construction activities such as conditions assessments, engineering reports, construction documents, archaeology investigations, use feasibility studies and heritage tourism initiatives, according to the state.

The recommended projects will first have to be approved by both the Garden State Preservation Trust and the the New Jersey Legislature for approval.
