HOBOKEN, NJ — A new coffee shop in Hoboken has an added feature that will help out harried parents — a large back room with toys for kids, including ride-on cars and a play kitchen.

The Hive opened Monday and has taken over a corner spot once occupied by longtime meat shop Truglio's, which closed last year when the two owners retired. The shop is at 1000 Park Ave., the corner of Tenth Street and Willow Avenue.

For now, the kids' playroom in the back is available by reservation, to keep occupancy low during coronavirus, co-owner Catherine Willhoit said.

Besides coffee and beverages, the shop also offers baked goods and sells a few home goods.

The facility has maintained some of the features of the original store, according to a September Facebook post: "We’ve taken enormous care to preserve many of the original details of 1000 Park, which was originally a home/shop back when it was first built."

They noted, "And what was once a meat locker will be part of The Hive’s playspace and the bricked, arched doorway you see here was an original entrance."

The owners uncovered this relic from the past when transforming the space: An apparent ID badge from a worker in the area.

"We're a sophisticated gathering space," notes the Facebook page, "that provides a creative zone for littles to roam and play, while caregivers have a break to enjoy beverage, a snack, or a browse through the shop’s curation of healthy wellness and beauty brands."

The store uses Kobrick's Coffee, which has a location on the Hoboken/Jersey City border.

The two Hoboken moms who own the shop, Willhoit and Kristin Yacovone, posted that it will open Monday at 7 a.m.
