Hoboken Councilman To City: Let Residents Know Before You Tow

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken 1st Ward Councilman Michael DeFusco said in a recent blog post that two weeks ago, a resident called him, desperate because his car was towed away as he was about to go to work — and layoffs were imminent.

DeFusco questioned why the operator was only willing to accept cash, and why residents can't get their cars released if they see them about to be towed.

DeFusco has an ordinance up for introduction at the Wednesday City Council meeting that would require the city to notify residents with a phone call before they are towed. In addition, the measure would allow them to pay by credit card, and to get their car back without a release fee if they arrive before the car is towed away.
