Hoboken Declares Snow Emergency as Blizzard Looms

City to open emergency operations center, as forecast calls for 20-30 inches of snow, 65 mph wind gusts and potential for coastal flooding

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management issued a snow emergency declaration this afternoon as a possibly historic winter storm is expected to dump up to 30 inches of snow on the metropolitan area, with wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour and moderate coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning that starts at 1 p.m. on Monday and lasts through midnight on Tuesday, with snow falling at a rate of two to four inches per hour.

The city has banned parking on snow emergency routes starting 9 p.m. tonight until further notice, and said vehicles are subject to towing.

Snow emergency routes include the following streets:

Washington Street -- both sides

Willow Avenue (West Side) -- Observer Avenue to 11th Street

3rd Street (North Side) -- Jackson Street to River Street

4th Street (South Side) -- River Street to Jackson Street

5th Street (South Side) -- Clinton Street to Hudson Street

9th Street (North Side) -- Clinton Street to Hudson Street

13th Street (North Side) -- Washington Street to Willow Avenue

17th Street (Both Sides)

Parking is also banned on Vezzetti Way, which is parallel to Observer Highway, as the area will be used for dumping snow as well as the north side of 13th Street from Willow Avenue to Madison Street.

Starting tonight at 8 p.m., the city is providing reduced rate $5 parking for residents with a valid residential or temporary permit at the municipal lots Garage B, on Second Street, between Hudson and River Streets or at Garage D, at 215 Hudson Street.

Disabled residents with a handicapped plate or hang tag can park at the reduced $5 rate at $371 Fourth Street.

A warming center will be opened at the Wallace School, located at 1100 Willow Avenue, from 3 p.m. on Monday until 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
