Hoboken High Sees Improvement on State Report Card

The New Jersey Department of Education released its annual report card this week.

Hoboken High School saw an increase in language proficiency, but a decrease in math proficiency in the 2009-2010 school year, according to the state's school report card that was released on Monday afternoon. 

The state report card also showed that 40 percent of graduates went on to attend a full-time four-year college. Hoboken High reported a 100 percent graduation rate for the 2009-2010 school year. According to the report card, 32 percent of graduates went on to two-year colleges.

Attendance levels at the High School, which had a total enrollment of 530 students, remained roughly the same in the 2009-2010 academic year. The average class size at the high school was 14 students and school was in session roughly six hours and 20 minutes a day (this is about half an hour less than the state average of six hours and 53 minutes).

The report also showed that at about a quarter of the students' homes, English is not the first language.  

The High School met its Annual Yearly Progress and Hoboken was not deemed a district "in need of improvement."

Proficiency levels

Of Hoboken High's students, 81 percent scored proficient in language, up from 69 percent the year before. The state's average for the 2009-2010 school year was 69.3 percent. 

In mathematical proficiency, the school saw a drop. While in 2008-2009, 51.8 percent of students scored proficient in math, last year's average hovered at 41.3 percent. This is also lower than the state's average, which has a proficiency level of 50 percent.

Attendance 

Hoboken High's attendance level saw a slight increase in the attendance level compared to the year before, according to the report card. Attendance was 91.7 percent in 2009-2010, while it was 91.2 percent the year before. 

Hoboken High's attendance rate is below the state average of 94.6 percent. 

Per grade, the attendance rate of HHS, compared to the state's, looks like this:

Faculty attendance at Hoboken High in 2009-2010 was 96.1 percent.
