Hoboken Little League Remembers Courageous Army Sergeant

Sergeant William Fesken may be gone, but his memory lives on whenever a Hoboken Little League player steps onto the field.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Sergeant William Fesken may be gone, but his memory lives on whenever a Hoboken Little League player steps onto the field.

On the Hoboken Little League’s 2017 opening day, city officials and several of Fesken’s relatives stepped onto the field for a re-dedication ceremony in honor of the late military veteran, who was killed in combat in Vietnam in 1967 and posthumously awarded the Army Distinguished Service Cross.

The Sgt. William Fesken Memorial Field was named in his honor in 1967, city officials stated.

The ceremony featured the unveiling of a sign in honor of Fesken over the center field scoreboard and a first pitch thrown out by his nephew, Hoboken police officer Anthony Fesken.

"On behalf of the Fesken family, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who have made this rededication possible, especially Mayor Dawn Zimmer, the American Legion Post 107, Little League President James Farina, Ray Guzman and his staff from Hoboken Sign, and all Hoboken veterans past and present," said the late veteran’s brother, John Fesken. "This is a fitting tribute to my brother, whose sacrifice for our country will never be forgotten.”
