Hudson County Farmers Markets To Check Out: 2021 Guide

It's the perfect season for fresh produce. Check out where you can find a farmer's market in Hoboken, Jersey City, and more.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Summer is quickly approaching, which means local farmers markets will be popping up across Hudson County. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit local businesses hard, it's the perfect time to support these local businesses, farmers, and artisans.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the pandemic also brought new challenges to food security and that having access to healthy food options "are an important part of overall physical and mental health" during this time.

The CDC states that outdoor farmers markets are a "lower risk shopping option" that benefits both shoppers and the community. Guidelines include mask-wearing, social distancing, and maintaining good hygiene.

Hoboken had two farmers markets last year, and both are set to return this year but have not opened yet:

  • Uptown Farmers Market — According to the market's Facebook page, "Spring is here and you know what that means — It’s almost farmers market season! We’re gearing up to open the Uptown Farmers Market on May 1 under the 14th Street Viaduct - with fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products, and more every Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m." Phil Cohen posted on his Facebook page that the market is "the pride of the #5thWard" and asked for comments.
  • Hoboken Farmers Market — Signs for the second market went up recently, but it will not start again until June 1. It will tentatively take place on Garden Street between Fourth and Fifth streets through October. Last year, it ran from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Keep updated here.

In the past, Jersey City has had farmers markets in several neighborhoods. Not all have announced their 2021 seasons, but one kicked off on Monday:

The Downtown Jersey City Farmers Market runs each Monday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Grove Street PATH station, through Dec. 20. It boasts fresh produce, pies, cookies, flowers and more.
