If You Heard Fireworks Near Hoboken Tuesday, Here's Why (UPDATED)

New York planned to set off fireworks Tuesday night at 9:15 p.m. in honor of lifting many COVID restrictions.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Nothing gets Hoboken residents to comment on social media like the sound of unexpected fireworks — well, except perhaps fights over the best pizza, best sandwich, or best mozzarella in town. But often, a surprise firework celebration in New York City elicits resident questions on social media.

So just so no one's surprised, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday that fireworks would be set off across New York state to celebrate the end of some COVID restrictions, amid a vaccination rate of over 70 percent. Cuomo Tweeted on Tuesday:

The fireworks will blast off Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. from New York Harbor and other locations in the state. The Empire State Building and other skyscrapers will be lit up in the state's colors.
