Mama Johnson Field Won't be Open for the Weekend, Ribbon Cutting Next Week

Renovations on Mama Johnson Field took place this summer.

Renovations on Mama Johnson Field have been completed, said Jake Stuiver, chairman of the Hoboken Housing Authority, but the field will not be open for use yet this weekend.

The field—which has, among other things, been used for the adult zogsports league—will be ready for use once infill under the turfing has dried, Stuiver said. And since there haven't been three consecutive days without rain since the renovations were completed, the ribbon cutting has been postponed until October 18 at 4 p.m. 

The ceremony at 400 Harrison St. will be followed by a resident appreciation day. Festivities for residents and visitors will run from 3 to 6 p.m. The rain date for this event is October 23, the Hoboken Housing Authority announced.

Renovations took place this summer and was paid by both the city and the Hoboken Housing Authority.

While intital plans had predicted that the field would have been ready to use by July 4, completion of the project was delayed.

"It is time for the community to come and enjoy the new and improved Mama Johnson field," said HHA Executive Director Carmelo Garcia in a press release. 

 The field was expanded to be a multipurpose field that will host the girls softball program, PAL grunts football and instructional soccer program. The field also received a new drainage system, new dugouts, bleachers, a new fence, scoreboards and batting cages and new lighting. The field also has a new surface, which will be conducive to multiple sports.
