Man Charged With DWI After July 4 Collision In Hoboken

Police responded to a two-car accident near the north end of Hoboken on the night of July 4 and charged one man with DWI.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Police charged a 66-year-old Hoboken resident with Driving While Intoxicated and reckless driving after a collision on the night of July 4.

Police said that Police Officers Brandon Fitzgibbons and Christopher Soto responded to 14th and Washington streets on a report of a motor vehicle crash after 10 p.m.

Upon they arrival, they learned two vehicles were involved in a same direction sideswipe type crash, police say.

While investigating the crash, Officer Soto suspected that one of the drivers was under the influence of an intoxicant, police say.

The driver was identified as Juan Matias, 66, from Hoboken, police say.

Sgt. Edward Sellick responded and conducted a standardized field sobriety test. He determined that the driver was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle, police say.

Matias was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to headquarters. He provided breath samples and was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and reckless driving, according to police.
