Hoboken's Schools Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Check out these events in the upcoming month at Hoboken's schools.

It's Hispanic Heritage Month until October 15 and Hoboken's schools are celebrating. Every school is holding events this month. Check out below when and where the celebrations are being held.

Brandt: The Joseph F. Brandt Primary School Kindergarten Team is ready to embrace Hispanic Heritage Month. The Brandt Kindergarten Team will be reading a folktale from Spain and Latin America entitled “The Story of the Half Chicken.” Students will also be learning a well-known song called “Los Pollitos.” As a culminating activity, each Kindergarten class will be singing the song to a Pre-K class here in Brandt to help promote Hispanic Heritage.

Calabro: Calabro Elementary School will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Cultural month by focusing on the following areas:
Week 1: Highlight all the countries that speak Spanish as their first language. Create awareness of the Spanish language throughout the entire world.
Week 2: Not every American eats the same food, likewise not every Hispanic eats the same food. Students will learn characteristics of foods from various Spanish speaking countries.
Week 3: Famous Hispanic role models will be presented to the students.
Week 4: Hispanic music and dance will be explored.
Week 5: Students will make presentations for the culmination of Hispanic Heritage month on the different areas they were exposed to.

Connors: For Hispanic Heritage Month the students in grades five through seven have a "Hispanic Celebration Project" assignment. These students will select a Spanish speaking country, create a poster including pictures, and an important Hispanic person from that country. This poster will be shared with the class in form of a 3 minute presentation. The posters will then be posted near the bulletin board in the hallway near the Spanish classroom.

A photo of this will be shared in the monthly newsletter. In grades one through seven all students have been introduced to Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist, which was followed by discussions regarding her life, her contributions to the Mexican people, art and how her paintings were different from others because they included herself with animals.

Wallace: In observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, students in Wallace school will be exploringHispanic culture in a variety of ways. Many U.S. place names are derived from the Spanish language and students will be invited to locate, tag on a U.S. map, and translate various states and cities. Some students will use information from the U.S. Bureau of the Census to create a bar graph, a picture graph, or a circle graph showing the country of origin of U.S. Hispanics. In addition, through the medium of art, students will design a postage stamp that could be part of a Hispanic Heritage stamp series. The stamp might show a famous Hispanic American or some aspect of Hispanic-American history or culture.

Hoboken High School: During Hispanic Heritage month the Hispanic Culture Club at the high school will create a Hispanic heritage/cultural display case. The case will feature a notable Hispanic leader every day. The Hispanic Culture Club and the HHS Emergency Response Team will be holding an Hispanic Heritage Month Community Health fair and Blood Drive at HHS on Saturday, October 20.
