Mustard Seed School Announces New Head of School

Thursday, January 14, 2021, Hoboken, NJ—Mustard Seed School announced today that Abigail Hall Choi will succeed Tom Postema as head of school. She will be the fourth head of school in the school’s 41-year history. Postema will retire on June 30 after twelve years of service—10 as the head of school and two as a middle school teacher.

Over the past 15 years, in addition to Middle School Director, Hall Choi has held several roles at
Mustard Seed including Director of School Initiatives & Improvement, and fourth and fifth grade teacher. She led the school through its most recent strategic planning process and has been dedicated to enhancing the Middle School program. Hall Choi earned her Master’s Degree in Social-Organizational Psychology from Columbia University, Teachers College and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Covenant College. She is completing a Certificate in School Management & Leadership at Harvard.

This appointment is the result of an intense and rigorous seven-month process. The Board of Trustees convened a Head of School Search Committee and engaged the prestigious education leadership search firm Carney Sandoe & Associates to assist with the search.

“Ms. Hall Choi was selected from a global pool of highly qualified candidates,” says Raúl Pérez, President of the Mustard Seed School Board of Trustees. “We had over 80 candidates engage in the process. After an in-depth evaluation, the board overwhelmingly decided that Ms. Hall Choi is the best person to lead the school moving forward. I’m excited about the vision, energy, and passion that she brings to our community.”

Mustard Seed School is a progressive, arts-infused, Christian independent school located on 5th Street and Willow Avenue. It serves 205 preschool to eighth grade students. The school has a mission to teach each child to know and care for their community and world. To inspire minds, cultivate hearts, and remove barriers. Mustard Seed School students go into the world and become change makers, people who make a difference.
