HOBOKEN, NJ — The pandemic isn't stopping new businesses from coming to Hoboken, and a bunch are on a way for the main drag of Washington Street. They include a Manhattan cookie outfit called Chip City, two uptown smoke shops, two taco eateries, and a new dim sum joint.

Here are some of the shops and changes:

  • Groceries and smokes: A&H Smoke Shop recently posted a sign in its window at 1222 Washington St. (See above.) Three blocks south, a grocery and smoke shop, Washington Convenience & Smoke, posted signage saying "Coming Soon" at 934 Washington St.
  • Chip City Cookies: The West Village-based bake shop is jumping the river to open a location in New Jersey, with signage posted next door to the upcoming site of the new Hoboken Shake Shack on the 100 block of Washington Street.
  • South Lions Dim Sum & Tea Shop: Signs at 512 Washington St. say the Historic Preservation Commission gave the restaurant permission March 1 for its new sign (see photo of the location above). There's already a South Lions shop in East Hanover. Here is a copy of the Hoboken menu, which describes the cuisine as Hong Kong-style dim sum.
  • Frankie and Ava's has moved: A sign in the window of the Italian restaurant at 208 Washington St. says it's closed for two weeks while it changes locations. The website says "Big announcement coming soon!" Meanwhile:
  • Tacoria will replace Frankie and Ava's: "The cat's out of the bag," wrote the company on Instagram last week, but they say the don't have an opening date yet.
  • Wise Vision has moved: Wise Vision & Hearing has moved from their corner at 334 Washington St. across the street to 327 Washington St. What will replace Wise on its old corner? A restaurant, perhaps?
  • You can order lobster delivered! This is not a drill. Ed's Lobster Bar in SoHo announced last month that they will deliver lobster dishes to Hoboken on Friday nights. Customers must order at least 48 hours in advance. There is a $100 minimum. Email soho@lobsterbarnyc.com for more information.
  • Caffeine-infused yogurt: NJ Monthly reported on Monday that Joyo, a new caffeinated yogurt company, launched in Hoboken last year and is being touted as an alternative to coffee.
  • Congratulations to Hudson Table: The Hoboken-based Hudson Table, which offers cooking classes and rooftop dining, announced Monday that its Brooklyn location will open in spring.
  • Filipino food and tacos: An Asian fusion chain, Filp Sigi, has popped up to do evening business at O'Bagel at 600 Washington St. Among the items? Bi-Curious Birria tacos. Learn more here.
