New Tree Planted In Church Square Park

In honor of Earth Day, the city has a new tree in the park.

A new willow tree was planted in Church Square Park on Monday afternoon in honor of Earth Day.

The tree — which is already ten foot tall — replaces a tree that was removed after Hurricane Sandy did serious damage to the park.

The tree grows about 10 feet a year, said James Tricarico of the Shade Tree Commission.

Verizon donated money to help plant the tree.

The best reasons to have more trees in the park, he explained shortly after the planting on Monday, is to have more shade, a sanctuary for the birds and keep nature close to people.

The shade tree commission will have a booth at the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival this year, Tricarico said. He said the commission is always looking for volunteers to help get more trees planted in Hoboken.
