Readers have weighed in about the “UFOs” seen last weekend in North Jersey.
They’re sky lanterns, several people claim.
“Rich,” a Belleville resident, sent Patch a video that allegedly captured what he termed “UFOs” flying over the township and heading towards New York City around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

There were four objects in total, including two that “were in a formation,” the resident said.
“My family and my neighbor saw them,” the local skywatcher claimed. “They just vanished after going northeast. I have no clue what they were, but they weren’t planes or balloons. They were silent, changing color and moving fast.”

But after taking a look at the video evidence, several residents commented that the “UFOs” were only sky lanterns, small hot air balloons made out of paper that have been made for centuries.
“Sky lanterns,” one commenter declared. “They can be tied together and moved by the wind.”

But a few other residents had some additional tongue-in-cheek suggestions for what the lights might have been.
“Aliens dropping off the new iPhone?” one Patch reader suggested.
“The four objects were the four Ward Councilmembers hovering over their wards with their drones seeking voters,” another wrote. “Hopefully, we can end their terms in May.”
