The lead singer – known for as much for his battles with addiction as his inimitable voice and stage presence – was in the middle of a “comeback tour” with his band, The Wildabouts, and was slated to play a show at the Medina Ballroom on Thursday night.

A “source connected to the band” told TMZ that Weiland was found on the tour bus, which was parked outside a motel in the town of Bloomington, Minnesota, around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Billboard.com published a statement from the Bloomington Police Department which read:

“On Dec. 3rd at 8:22 p.m., officers responded to a report of an unresponsive adult male in a recreational motor vehicle located in the 2200 block of Killebrew Drive. Officers arrived and determined the adult male was deceased.”

Weiland’s career included huge commercial success as a founding member of Stone Temple Pilots in the 1990s and a stint aside ex-Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum with supergroup Velvet Revolver from 2002 to 2007.

His life also included struggles with substance abuse and brushes with the law, as evidenced by his 1995 conviction for buying crack-cocaine, repeated DUI offenses and reported heroin abuse.

Weiland was in Montclair at the Wellmont Theater for a show on Nov. 28. Watch a clip from the concert below.
