Snow Piles Up In Hoboken During 'Long Duration' Storm

Forecasters said the sleet would transform back into snow after 4 p.m. Here is the updated forecast and snow totals for around the area.

HOBOKEN, NJ — What the National Weather Service called a "long duration snowfall" is expected to continue to powder Hoboken through Friday afternoon.

In the mile-square city, a combination of plowing, salting, and warmer weather kept the main streets free of snow by 2 p.m. (see photos). The National Weather Service said sleet would transform back into snow starting around 4 p.m.

Hoboken had started pre-treating streets with brine, a form of saltwater, on Wednesday night to reduce the initial accumulation on the roads. People were asked to move their cars from snow emergency routes by 1 a.m. (More here: Hoboken Drivers: Move Your Cars.)

Updated Hoboken forecast

For Hoboken, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Thursday at 4 a.m. through Friday at 7 p.m.

As of Thursday afternoon, the forecast said:

  • Thursday afternoon: Snow and sleet, becoming all snow after 4 pm. High near 30. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Northeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
  • Thursday night: Snow. Low around 27. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Northeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Friday: Snow, mainly before 3pm. High near 33. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Northeast wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
  • Friday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 9pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 26. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.
