Tree Removed From Church Square Park; Seven Other Trees Pruned

Some of the trees are top heavy, which could be a safety concern for park visitors.

A Bartlett Pear tree was removed from Church Square Park yesterday, said City Spokesman Juan Melli.

"An analysis found that the tree had multiple major cracks down the trunk and was at risk of falling," the city announced in a statement.

Seven other trees in the park are top heavy, said Melli, and are being pruned by the Department of Environmental Services. The point of pruning the trees, Melli added, is to prevent a split like the one that was removed. The city sent along photos of the tree with the release.

In one incident, Melli said, a branch fell on an 8-year-old child in the park.

"We are trimming several trees to alleviate this problem," Melli said.
