HOBOKEN, NJ — The renowned Tribeca Film Festival, noted for the premieres of many successful independent films, won't just take place in Manhattan this April. Some of the events will be held across the river in Hoboken for the first time in the event's 19-year history, according to a press release issued Monday by the festival.

"Last year," said the release, "Tribeca’s opening night brought The Apollo uptown to its namesake theater in Harlem, and this year, the festival will continue to use cinematic storytelling and experiences to connect communities across the Hudson River to the city of Hoboken. The city’s rich cinematic history includes scenes filmed from Oscar winner On the Waterfront, Julie & Julia, Funny Girl, The Station Agent, among others."

“It's wonderful to embrace new audiences with our neighbor across the river,” said festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal.

“We are incredibly thrilled to bring the renowned Tribeca Film Festival to Hoboken,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla. “There’s no better location to host the festival than our mile square, offering a wealth of culture with our local artists, galleries, and The Mile Square Theatre Company, and further cements our city as one of the major cultural destinations in the Tri-State area.”

The festival was founded in 2001 by Robert DiNiro, Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff to help revitalize the culture and economy in lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 attacks.

This year's events take place April 15 through April 26.

Some of the events will take place in the North End of Hoboken, a formerly industrial part of town that's being revitalized with an independent book shop/coffee shop, restaurants, and the professional theater. Bhalla recently said he'd like a light rail train stop there as well.
