How many bike riders and pedestrians crossed the George Washington Bridge in 2015?

In July of 2014, the Port Authority of NY/NJ installed bike and pedestrian counters at the busy bridge at the urging of local nonprofits Transportation Alternatives and the NJ Bike & Walk Coalition.

Here are the final numbers for 2015, according to Cyndi Steiner of the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition:

  • There were a total of 382,433 bike trips and 226,047 pedestrian trips across the bridge last year
  • An average of 524 cyclists and 309 pedestrians made round-trips each day
  • There were more than 50.4 million vehicular crossings at the bridge in the eastbound tolled direction

In addition, the counters revealed information about weekday and weekend patterns, the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition stated.

For example, on weekdays, the busiest hours for both cyclists and pedestrians correspond to peak commuting hours to and from New York City. On weekends, travel patterns indicate recreational trips to and from New Jersey are taking place in the morning and early afternoon.

Sunday is the busiest day of the week for cyclist and pedestrian crossings, when more than 30 percent of bikers and 22 percent of pedestrians cross the bridge, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition reported.

“These findings show that cyclists and pedestrians are increasingly choosing to use the George Washington Bridge for both commuting and recreation, and the Port Authority should be encouraged to make the maximum possible allocation of space for them,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.

HOW TO GET ON THE BRIDGE

According to the Port Authority website, there are several entrances where pedestrian/cyclists can access the bridge. The south sidewalk is normally open from 6 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. seven days a week, and the north sidewalk is closed at all times.

Construction projects periodically change which sidewalk is open, Port Authority officials state.

In New Jersey, the entrances to the north and south sidewalks are located on Hudson Terrace in Fort Lee, the agency writes.

“From the intersection of Lemoine Avenue and Bruce Reynolds Blvd. (Bridge Plaza South), Hudson Terrace can be reached by proceeding east on Bruce Reynolds Blvd. (toward the bridge). Hudson Terrace is the cross street at the "T" intersection at the end of Bruce Reynolds Boulevard. Cross Hudson Terrace at this intersection, make a left and proceed north. Go about two blocks, and you will find the entrance ramp to the south sidewalk on your right (before the overpass that leads to the bridge). The entrance ramp to the north sidewalk is on the other side of the bridge overpass.”
