FREDON – Friends were hopeful for Steph. The 38-year-old single New Jersey mother, once a beloved preschool teacher, was about to embark on life-saving surgery and was in dire need of a liver transplant.

Stephanie Murch of Fredon Township had prior surgeries in 2010, and had been through hell. This past year, Steph was struggling trying to find out why she was sick again, her family said.

She was listed at University Hospital in Newark for a new liver and "a new chance on life," the family said. They set up a GoFundMe page to help Steph and her daughter.

Now the family is redirecting their efforts toward her daughter, Lola, a week after Steph passed away from liver complications. Money from the GoFundMe page will go to help 10-year-old Lola, the family said.

"Lola will live on through her mother’s beautiful spirit and her legacy," the family said. "We will continue to raise money for our sweet Lola and truly we are so grateful for all the love and support and prayers."

Born in Newton, Steph grew up in Fredon Township and lived in Williamstown before moving back to Fredon Township in 2014.

She was a 1999 graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in communication and journalism, according to her obituary.

She was a preschool teacher in Gloucester County before the birth of her daughter, Lola.

"A great mother to her Lola, Stephanie loved being involved with all of Lola's activities," her obituary said. "She was a true patriot who enjoyed country music, reading and the beach."

Steph had been diagnosed with a rare non-alcoholic liver disease, which created permanent scarring and cirrhosis, according to the family.

Steph received a blood transfusion as recently as Aug. 5. Earlier, she suffered complications and was transported to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

She seemed to be improving and was walking with improved blood pressure, the family said.

But then the complications came back. Steph passed away on Aug. 7.

"Stephanie loved her family, friends, her community, and was a true American," the family said. "But more than anything, she loved her Lola and loved being a mom. "
