Hopatcong Animal Shelter Shuts Down To Visitors

HOPATCONG, NJ - Due to the encroaching novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, the Hopatcong Animal Shelter has made the decision to close the shelter to visitors until further notice.

"We want to assure you that we will continue to provide a high level of care to the animals with us at the animal shelter," officials said in a statement. "We will be implementing the following temporary policies which are designed to protect public health and reduce the spread of COVID-19 within our community."

New procedure:

  • Animal Control will still be respond to emergency/high-priority calls. These types of calls include aggressive animals, sick/injured animals, rabies suspect animals, and found animal.
  • Animal complaints will be handled via telephone at through the Police department 973-398-5000.
  • If it is determined that a physical response is needed by our ACO/Officers, advise dispatch if anyone in the household has recently experienced any flu-like symptoms or has encountered a person known to be infected with COVID-19.
  • When officers respond out for a call, please maintain at least a 6 foot social distance for their safety and yours, as recommended by the CDC and NJDOH. For any questions, please call 973-398-5000

Adoptions will be made by appointment only by calling the shelter at 973-601-3847.
Requests to reclaim a pet impounded at the shelter can be made by appointment only by calling 973-398-5000 Found animals will continue to be posted on our Facebook page.

While pet stores do remain open, if anyone is in need of assistance with feeding their pet can send a private message. Hopatcong Animal Shelter has a food bank at the shelter for anyone who is in need.
