1 Dead In July 4th Shooting Between Man, Newton Police

The NJ Attorney General's Office is investigating the fatal police-involved shooting where a semi-automatic weapon was found at the scene.

NEWTON, NJ — New Jersey’s Attorney General’s Office has stepped in to investigate a shooting that turned deadly on Sunday between a man and Newton Police Officers.

Few details have been released about the incident and spokesperson Lt. Michael Monaco of Newton's Police Department referred inquiries on Tuesday to the Attorney General's Office.

What is known is at about 9:30 p.m. on July 4 three Newton Police Officers went to a Clive Place home — tucked within a quiet neighborhood a few streets up from the Merriam Avenue School — for a 911 call.

During an encounter outside the home, two of the officers fired their service guns killing the man, whose identity is not being released at this time, according to the Attorney General's Office.

The officers performed first aid on the man, but he was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m., according to the Attorney General's Office.

Both the Andover Township Police Department and New Jersey State Police also came out after shots had been fired. A semi-automatic handgun was found at the scene.

As part of a directive established by Attorney General Gurbir Grewal in December 2019, police departments must notify their County Prosecutor’s Office — which in turn contacts the Attorney General — when an encounter between police and a civilian turns deadly. If an incident, similar to the one on Sunday, does not result in a fatality, an investigation remains at the county level.
