Last Week's Storm Was A Blizzard In Sussex County

Other parts of the state might have called the storm a dud, but Sussex got hit full force.

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ— Despite complaints by some, including Gov. Chris Christie, that forecasts for last week's storm were way off, conditions in Sussex County did meet the technical requirements for a blizzard.

Much of the state saw snow totals well under the prediction, but parts of Sussex County, including Vernon and Wantage, got a full 19 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service confirmed that there were blizzard conditions at Sussex Airport in Wantage during the storm. These conditions hit during the middle of the day.

There is a set of criteria that turns a bad storm into an official blizzard, according to the NWS:

  • Sustained winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35
  • mph.
  • Considerable falling and/or blowing snow
  • Visibility frequently reduced to less than 1/4 mile
  • Occurs for three hours or more
