NJ Weather: Winter Storm Warnings Expand In New Jersey

The storm could cause some schools to close to delay openings. Will the winter storm watch expand even more?

The winter storm warnings for Wednesday have expanded in New Jersey.

A winter storm warning is in effect for two New Jersey counties now that as many as 7 inches could fall in the region. The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

A winter weather advisory is in effect through much of the rest of the state, while a hazardous weather outlook is in effect in Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May and eastern Burlington counties.

Here is what's expected:

  • WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are expected in North Jersey, particularly in Sussex and Passaic counties.
  • In Morris, Bergen, Warren, Union, Essex, Somerset and Bergen counties, mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and ice accumulations of up to one-tenth inch are expected.
  • In Central Jersey and southwestern New Jersey, mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected.
  • WHEN...Snow is expected to begin late Tuesday night, becoming heavy at times Wednesday morning in Sussex and Passaic counties and lighter elsewhere. Snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain Wednesday afternoon. In Central and South Jersey, snow will transition to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain during or just after the morning commute on Wednesday. Precipitation should change to rain from southeast to northwest between 9 and 11 AM. The wintry mix could briefly transition back to snow in some areas before ending Wednesday evening.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on very difficult travel conditions, including during the morning and evening commutes on Wednesday. Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times during heavy snow. Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour during the morning.

  • Tuesday: Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 39. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
  • Tuesday night: A slight chance of freezing rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Wednesday: Rain, snow and/or freezing rain before 10am, then snow between 10am and 11am, then rain after 11am. High near 44. East wind 7 to 11 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: Rain or snow before 3am, then a chance of rain and snow between 3am and 4am, then a chance of snow after 4am. Low around 30. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
