Precipitation was expected to start out briefly as snow on Sunday morning in those counties under the advisory before quickly transitioning to a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow. A transition then back over to snow will occur this afternoon.

Here is what to expect:

  • Periods of moderate snow are possible with 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet. A light glaze of ice from freezing rain is possible.
  • The areas most impacted will be the Poconos and northwest New Jersey Sunday into Sunday evening
  • A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is possible. Up to one-tenth of an inch of ice from freezing rain is possible. An inch or less of snow or sleet is also possible.

AccuWeather is calling this system a "new, sneaky storm" with mostly rain spreading across the mid-Atlantic region through Sunday. Snow will continue to push eastward on Sunday, with some accumulations expected in Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Jersey and New York, AccuWeather said.

The storm is forecast to reorganize along the Atlantic coast, and how quickly the storm strengthens, slows its forward speed and draws in colder air during Sunday night and Monday will determine if places such as New York City and Philadelphia end up with a period of accumulating snow, according to AccuWeather.

This process may also determine if cities such as North Jersey end up with enough snow to shovel and plow instead of a small, easily-managed amount of snow, according to AccuWeather.

Here is the forecast:

  • Sunday: A chance of snow, freezing rain and/or sleet before 3 p.m., then snow or rain. High near 34 to 40. East wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a tenth-of-an-inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Sunday night: Snow or rain, mainly before 10 p.m. Low around 31. Northeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
  • Monday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. North wind around 5 mph.
  • Monday night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. North wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
  • Tuesday: A slight chance of snow showers before 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Northwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
