Police Log: Man Poses As Essex County Constable

Sparta Police encounter impersonator during Sunday afternoon patrol.

At about 12:15 PM this past Sunday, Sparta Police pulled over a car for multiple equipment violations. The driver identified himself to authorities as an "Essex County Constable." The individual went so far as to provide a gold badge and a poorly constructed ID card.

According to police reports, the individual was not a Constable. The 26-year-old from Elizabeth was put under arrest, according to police, and charged with Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer 4th degree crime, Providing False Documents 4th degree crime, and Hindering and Obstruction both DP offenses. He was also issued moving violation summonses for Driving while Suspended, Maintenance of Lamps, and Unclear License Plates. He was released pending a court appearance.
