According to their website, SAS was founded as Sparta Ambulance Service on July 11, 1947 by members of the local VFW Post #7248. The Service answered 48 calls in its first year of operation using a single ambulance. At that time, the Service’s headquarters was located at the VFW Hall on Main Street. Members were required to be trained in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As the years have gone by, much has changed. Known in the community as the Sparta Ambulance Squad, the headquarters is now located on Sparta Avenue and houses three ambulances and an emergency response unit.
