Sparta Police And Fire Officials Teach Kids The Ropes

The Police Youth Academy kicked off yesterday in Sparta.

Sparta's Police Youth Academy began yesterday with approximately 45 students and one robot. Those in attendance had the chance to marvel at New Jersey State Police's robot, a piece of machinery that can go in and get police work done in places that could pose danger to human bodies. NJSP utilizes such robots in situations where there are bomb threats.

The Academy continued today with a variety of demonstrations. The Sparta Fire Department showed kids the Jaws of Life, which is used when a life-or-death extraction needs to take place. The N.J. State Police Helicopter and Atlantic Helicopter gave their own demonstrations, as well as the canines of the Sussex County Sheriff's Department.

As the summer comes to an end, books and classes on the horizon, Sparta youth had the opportunity to take a fun course in the real world, spending a couple of days learning about what emergency personnel do to keep them, and those around them, safe.
