Sparta Police Officers Remember Retired Communications Officer
Robert Jennings will be buried Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Branchville Cemetery.

Former communications officer for the Sparta Police Department and Vietnam combat veteran who received a Purple Heart during his service Robert Jennings as known as a hero who demonstrated conviction and strength by his colleagues.
Police in Sparta announced Thursday that the 71-year-old, who was under hospice care, died in his home Saturday with his wife of 45 years, Jolinda, by his side.
Jennings served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army until he was severely wounded in combat. He received a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged. He and his wife then settled in Frankford, and he became the communications officer for Sparta.

He was revered and respected by all members of Sussex County Law Enforcement and will be remembered as a positive fixture for the department, Sparta police said in a release.
He is survived by his daughter, Tina and her fiancé, John Phillips; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his brother Frank of Sebring, Florida; and his sister Laraine of Branchville, along with several nieces and nephews.

The Wood Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements. Jennings’ visitation will take place at the home, located at 16 Main Street in Branchville, Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Branchville Cemetery. Jennings will receive full military honors.
Memorial donations may be made to Jolinda Jennings, and condolences may be offered online at the Wood Funeral Home website.
