JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City's pricey proposed Pompidou Center made it into the state budget, with $24 million being allocated from New Jersey's $46.4 billion budget. The state legislature approved the budget on Thursday, Governor Murphy still has to sign off on the budget.
"Governor Phil Murphy has been committed to supporting transformational projects throughout the state + we’re so thankful of his support tor the Centre Pompidou Jersey City in the state budget," Mayor Steven Fulop said in a tweet on Thursday.

The introduction of the museum to the city is part of a larger effort to help the arts and culture scene flourish in Jersey City. The museum holds a price tag that is still being broken down by city officials — The Pathside building is 58,000 square feet and Fulop estimates renovations could cost between $10 million and $30 million.
The Jersey City Municipal Council approved a memorandum for the Pompidou center at last week's meeting. According to the memorandum of understanding, Jersey City would pay nearly $6 million for the first three phases of the project alone. After the museum opens, the city will pay another $6 million in fees to the main Pompidou Center. The fee breakdown includes the permissions to use "Centre Pompidou" in the name and costs for artwork and exhibits. The annual fees could decrease over time, according to the memorandum of understanding.

The Jersey City museum could open as soon as 2024 and would serve as a museum and, "An unparalleled cultural anchor and arts destination for the region and beyond." The 2024 opening coincides with the planned closure of the Pompidou's Paris center for renovations, freeing up much of the acclaimed art to come to Jersey City.
