JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City celebrated Arbor Day by planting 176 new trees throughout the city.

Last week's Arbor Day celebration highlighted the city's 'City of Trees' initiative and planted a variety of trees including Oak, Maple, Linden, Sweetgum, Lilac and Cherry blossoms. Of the 176 trees planted, 88 were planted in the newly reopened Riverview Fisk Park.

The city just completed a $2.1 million renovation of Riverview that included tree pruning and planting of 89 new trees, shrub and perennial plantings, an irrigation system, bocce court, shade structures, a community bulletin board, steel fencing, bench seating, new light fixtures, and a new multi-purpose plaza with a central water fountain.

To build on the tree-planting momentum started on Arbor Day, the city is also accepting applications for residents to adopt a tree in their neighborhood and continue the planting. Residents with empty tree pits on their block or street can fill out a tree planting application to bring some greenery to their neighborhood.
