Things To Do This Fall: Jersey City

5 fun things to help you rediscover Jersey City!

Jersey City is often overlooked in favor of its larger neighbors, New York across the Hudson River, and Hoboken just next door. Yet Jersey City itself is a center of history and cultural diversity. For the past six years, the city received perfect scores in an examination of the inclusivity of local laws, policies and services for the LGBTQ populations. Jersey City has also been cited as the most diverse city in New Jersey. So we created a list of the best things to do in Jersey City this fall!

  • Zeppellin Hall Biergarten- The Hall is an authentic, European style biergarten that will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Oktoberfest. This enormous venue has both indoor and outdoor spaces, perfect for those warmer fall days, where hundreds of people, family and friends, gather to eat, drink, and have fun. On the weekends the Hall also features live bands and dancing!
  • NJCU Gallery: Persistence of History- The art scene in Jersey City is one that is fairly undiscovered, yet there are many talented and inspired artists residing in this city. New Jersey City University is presenting a show focused on various artists perspectives on history. Some of the artists featured include Lewis Colburn, Tim Daly, Christy Georg, Nina Katchadourian, and many more. The show takes place on October 17th, but there will be panel discussions and workshops with the artists on later dates.
  • Liberty State Park - For some spectacular views of the city, head to Liberty State Park. The park is a beautiful respite in the midst of a sprawling metropolis. From the park one can see the Manhattan skyline, The Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. The park also offers ferry service to these historic locations.
  • Apple Tree House Tours - The Apple Tree House, formally known as the Van Wagenen House, was first built between 1710 and 1721 and is one of Jersey City’s oldest homes. The house is on the state and national register of historic places. Tours of the house are offered weekly with special events such as Washington Irving & The Legend of Jersey City, every so often.
  • Liberty Science Center- The Liberty Science Center may be Jersey City’s most well known attraction among kids, but can be fun for the entire family. The museum is home to the largest planetarium in the western hemisphere, and is featuring a new show on the mysterious phenomenon of black holes. On October 30th, the planetarium will be offering a War of the Worlds special as an ode to Orson Welles’ 1938 radio broadcast.
